Brewer Protocol and Biotoxin Illness

Brewer Protocol and Biotoxin Illness

In our last blog we talked about the Shoemaker Protocol, which is one method of treating biotoxin illness associated with exposure to mycotoxins. In this blog we’re going to talk about an alternative called the Brewer Protocol. Developed by Dr. Joseph Brewer and his colleagues, this protocol focuses on the colonization of bacteria in the sinus cavities. According to Dr. Brewer’s research this is the most likely area where bacteria from mold exposure (mycotoxins) colonize. Since the nasal passages are the main area of colonization, Dr. Brewer developed a protocol for attacking the bacteria there directly.

What is the Brewer Protocol for Treating Bioxtoxin Illness?

The Brewer Protocol attempts to eliminate the source of mycotoxin colonization in the nasal cavity. Buildings with leaks and water damage are where mold is most likely to form. When mold forms, it gives off toxic substances and bacteria that can be inhaled. The bacteria then begin to colonize in the nasal passages. According to Dr. Brewer, this colonization of bacteria in the nasal passages is what leads to symptoms of biotoxin illness like fatigue and nausea. By eliminating the resistant bacteria with targeted medication, the source of these symptoms can be removed.

What Treatments Does the Brewer Protocol Include?

There are two main parts to this protocol for treating biotoxin illness. They focus on the elimination of resistant bacteria in the nasal cavities and are applied directly to the nasal passages. The first step is to remove the biofilm that harbors the mycotoxins with EDTA 1%. Next a medication is needed to eliminate the bacteria itself. The Brewer Protocol calls for using the antifungal amphotericin B for destroying the mycotoxins. The amphotericin causes fungal cells to die by binding to the cell membrane.

An atomizer is the most effective way to deliver these medications right into the sinus cavity. Atomized intranasal amphotericin B is the best option for eliminating the resistant bacteria associated with illness from mold toxins.  Since the medication in an atomizer is delivered in small particles into the nasal passages, it attacks the cause of biotoxin illness symptoms directly. This method also reduces the chance of side effects from taking a medication orally, which could affect the whole body instead of just the area where bacteria are colonizing.

At Park Compounding Pharmacy we recommend to patients the latest device for intranasal delivery of medications to treat biotoxin illness. The Rhino Clear Sprint atomizer is portable and easy to use with a quick treatment time. It atomizes a 5 mL treatment in just 30 seconds and holds a full 15 mL of solution. A collection chamber makes sure that any discharge does not contaminate the solution. The Rhino Clear Sprint atomizer is also customizable with different nasal adaptors and can be used on patients 8 and up.

How is the Protocol Used in Practice?

If your symptoms are coming from an environment where mold toxins are present your doctor may prescribe the medications mentioned as part of the Brewer Protocol. The EDTA, which dissolves the biofilm coating, is used in the morning while the amphotericin B is used in the evening. At Park Compounding Pharmacy we offer packages that include everything necessary for following the Brewer Protocol including the Rhino Clear Sprint atomizer to deliver the medication most effectively. We are a trusted resource for those suffering from biotoxin illness and the negative effects of mold exposure.

    1. We are not aware of compounding pharmacies that might make this near you. Most compounding pharmacies should be able to make these formulations though.
