Sinus infection from a moldy environment can lead to chronic sinusitis that is best treated with a topical nasal spray. There are multiple types of medications that can be used to clear these infections from the nasal passages and sinuses. The best nasal spray for treating sinusitis from mold exposure is considered by many physicians to be BEG nasal spray.
The Best Nasal Spray for Biotoxin Illness
BEG nasal spray is a combination of three effective medications in one nasal spray. Together they provide a broad-spectrum treatment for bacteria and fungi that have colonized in the nasal passages and sinuses. The three medications in BEG spray are bactroban (mupirocin), EDTA, and gentamicin. These ingredients work synergistically to treat infection by destroying the biofilm that harbors bacteria and attacking multiple bacterial types. Both mupirocin and gentamicin are on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.
Bactroban (Mupirocin): This ingredient is an antibacterial that has been used for many years to treat infections of the nasal cavities. Bactroban attacks both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria but its main role in this formulation is to attack gram-positive bacteria. Mupirocin nasal spray is frequently used in hospitals for preventing outbreaks of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In clinical trials, mupirocin has been shown to eliminate S. aureus bacteria in 91% of participants and no serious side effects have been reported.
EDTA: This is a chelating agent that attacks the biofilm that harbors the infection. The addition of EDTA in the solution is essential as the other ingredients will not be able to fight infection unless the biofilm that protects it is destroyed.
Gentamicin: This antibacterial fights the infection along with mupirocin. Together they are able to cover a wide range of bacterial types to provide broad-spectrum treatment. Gentamicin also attacks different types of bacteria but its main role in this formulation is to attack gram-negative bacteria.
The most common formulation of BEG nasal spray includes bactroban 0.2%, EDTA 1%, and gentamicin 3%. There are many other nasal spray variations, however, depending on each patient’s unique situation. Antifungals like itraconazole or voriconazole may be added to provide additional treatment of fungi that have colonized as a result of mold exposure. When an antifungal is added we call the spray either BEG-I (with itraconazole) or BEG-V (with voriconazole). Levofloxacin may also be substituted for gentamicin as the second antibiotic, in which case we call it BEL nasal spray.
MARCoNS
MARCoNS (Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Coagulase Negative Staphylococci) are found in the nasal passages of many individuals suffering from biotoxin illness from mold exposure. An infection with MARCoNS can lead to symptoms like chronic fatigue and pain if left untreated. BEG is the best nasal spray for eliminating these highly resistant infections from the nasal passages and sinuses.
Side Effects of BEG Nasal Spray
The main issues individuals have with using BEG nasal spray come from nasal irritation. Since the ingredients are killing bacteria in the nasal passages, there may be some irritation (burning or stinging), inflammation, and nasal discharge as the biofilm breaks down and the toxic bacteria are removed. Some patients may also experience headaches or congestion. In rare case patients may experience an allergic reaction to fungi as they are killed. Systemic absorption of topical sinus medications is minimal so the side effects should not be serious. Most individuals will find that these symptoms clear up soon after stopping treatment.
