Ketotifen Capsules 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg

Ketotifen is an antiallergic drug used for treating a variety of conditions including asthma, food allergies, allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and more. Recently ketotifen has been prescribed more frequently for MCAS related to chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS).

Ketotifen is used in Canada, Europe, and Mexico to treat asthma and urticaria but is only commercially available in the U.S. for ophthalmic use. However the oral form of the drug continues to be frequently prescribed in the U.S. and can be obtained through compounding pharmacies. In multiple studies, oral ketotifen has been shown to be safe, effective, and superior to other antihistamines for treating MCAS.

Ketotifen and CIRS

CIRS often develops as a result of exposure to biotoxins such as those associated with water-damaged buildings (mold related) and Lyme disease infections. Patients with CIRS sometimes report symptoms of MCAS as well. MCAS involves overactivity of mast cells due to a trigger like mold, an infection, an irritant, or an allergen. Mast cells are an essential part of many bodily processes and are present in most tissues. However when they are overactive it can result in numerous side effects like rashes, swelling, flushing, headaches, and more. Ketotifen is an antihistamine that helps regulate the activity of mast cells.

For adults and older children, the most commonly recommended dose is 1 mg twice daily. For young children 6 months to 3 years old it is 0.5 mg twice daily.
