Doxycycline is used to manage periodontal disease and to help prevent bacterial growth following various dental procedures. In various dosage forms, this antibiotic can be administered either topically or systemically to treat periodontal disease. A doxycycline gel made by a compounding pharmacy can be used as a periodontal tray treatment, as a topical adjunct to scaling and root planing, and for managing peri-implantitis.
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic that is commonly used for managing a variety of bacterial infections. It was first approved by the FDA in the 1960s and has been prescribed for treating everything from Lyme disease to acne. For oral health, it can reduce the bacterial buildup of periodontal disease to improve pocket depth. It may be applied in a custom-tray form to allow sufficient contact with the periodontal pockets. Often antibiotics like minocycline and doxycycline are used as adjuncts to scaling and root planing for managing periodontal disease. A doxycycline gel may be used along with mechanical instrumentation to reduce bacterial burden in the periodontal pocket.
Studies have also shown that a doxycycline gel can help reduce peri-implantitis. Implants that are compromised by infection and inflammation are more likely to be lost. In addition to soft tissue, the surrounding bone tissue can be lost as the bacterial burden increases. Besides eradicating these bacteria, doxycycline has an additional benefit of stimulating osteoblasts, which can help heal lost bone tissue.
