Aphthous ulcers, or canker sores, are a common complaint among dental patients. While a majority of individuals will experience them occasionally, for some they become a chronic condition. Over-the-counter options are limited to light numbing agents and anti-inflammatories. These may provide only slight relief to someone suffering from painful canker sores. Our ulcer swish contains betamethasone, lidocaine, and tetracycline in one effective mouth rinse.
Betamethasone is a corticosteroid that can reduce inflammation. Topical corticosteroids are a mainstay in the treatment of aphthous ulcers.
Lidocaine is an anesthetic that numbs the mucosa to reduce pain. It is also an ingredient in most of our compounded topical anesthetic gels.
Tetracycline is an antibiotic that helps kill bacteria associated with ulcers. Tetracycline also slows the production of collagenase, which leads to the breakdown of collagen that causes ulcers.
Together these ingredients reduce pain, help sores heal faster, and prevent the development of new sores. The effective combination of three ingredients in one mouthwash is only available by prescription from a compounding pharmacy. There are currently no commercially available formulations for treating aphthous ulcers that have this combination.
The most frequently dispensed volume for our ulcer swish is 240mL. The recommended directions are to swish and spit or swallow 1 teaspoon every 4-6 hours as needed. The ideal time to use the ulcer swish is after mealtimes and after brushing at night. Eating and drinking should be avoided for about 30 minutes after use.
