Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition where the small intestine is populated by an abnormal amount and/or types of bacteria.
SIBO is a condition in which colonic-type bacteria (resembling bacteria normally found in the colon) proliferate in large numbers in the small intestine. SIBO may be caused by dysfunction of intestinal muscles or intestinal obstruction. The symptoms of SIBO are abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea. SIBO can be treated with erythromycin 50mg capsules, probiotics, or a combination of both. Treatment is continued for 3 to 4 months at which time the patient is reevaluated.
